Balloon is a cut, not a size: the volume is concentrated on the hips and thighs and tapers towards the hem. The garment therefore looks roomier on the leg than the size might suggest, and that is intentional.

The denim is cotton and lyocell with no stretch: it will not give at the waist with wear, so it is not worth sizing down in the hope that it loosens over time.
